D.O.P.E.

This is definitely one of the best free snowboard movies I have seen yet! This film contains the best Canadian street riders hitting some high consequence rails! E-Man Anderson's opener is killer; he has incredibly smooth style and is so fun to watch. Scot Brown also has a killer part; I don't know how he managed to throw down for Sandbox and Flow as well! Jody Wachniak, another Sandbox rider, has a great part too. Props to Alex Stathis as well with a great ender, that last trick is great.

Johnnie Paxson Montage!

I have to say, over the last few years Johnnie has become one the best urban snowboarders in my eyes. His part in "The Arena" this year, though cut short due to his injury, was in my opinion the best in the movie. Here's a clip of him a few years ago riding at Windells Summer Camp.

Last year he managed to bag the ender for "Hard to Earn," Finger on Da Trigger's 2009 flick. This part is insane.

This next clip is definitely a testament to his skill. Even after his broke his arm while filming for "The Arena," he can still manage to throw down double corks.

The final clip is of Johnnie filming with the Rome team for Transworld's 2010 "Team Shootout." Bear Mountain always has great park features and it's awesome to see a rider like Paxson hit them.

Eiki Helgason in "The Storming"

Ever since Eiki's ender in "No Correct Way," Rome's 2008 film, I have considered him one of the most wellrounded snowboarders out there. I mean, who else can do a tre flip on a snowboard! He's a great backcountry rider, he kills it in the park, is a very technical rail rider, and rides amazing switch. This part is definitely won't disappoint any Eiki fans, check it out! It's pretty damn impressive...

"F It" Bangers!

Click the photo below for a link to a great video!
Forum just released this video of some the best tricks in their video this year; honestly I would just watch this rather than buy the movie!  John Jackson throws down some sick double corks in the backcountry and Nic Sauve and Cameron Pearce have some great shots in the street.

Ben Bilocq and Jon Kooley in "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In"

Here is Ben and Jon's part from this year's Nitro team movie. This clip has some of their footage from Videograss's flick "Bon Voyage" from this year. Definitely a great part; I never knew Ben threw down so hard in the backcountry.

Tyler Flanagan's Ender in "Another Day in Paradise"

"Another Day in Paradise" is Mammoth Mountain's park movie and Tyler managed to bag the final part. This kid is nasty and he was only 16 during this part; he's a regular park slayer with great style. Definitely someone to look out for in the future.

Torstein Wins the Breck Dew Tour!

Torstein lays down quite an impressive run this year for the Breckenridge stop of this year's Dew Tour.

Torstein Horgmo: King of the Park!

I think one test of a rider's true skill is how solid their park laps are. If this is true, then Torstein is as good as they come. Man, he knows how to throw down! This first clip is from Torstein riding at Northstar two years ago...

and this one is at Park City and was taken from "Black Winter," Standard's film from last year.

This final clip is from "The Storming," Standard's 2010 flick. This is probably this sickest top to bottom park lap I have ever seen!

Nick Visconti Montage

Here is some of Nick's footage when he used to ride for Naptime Films (now better known as Variety Pack). These shots are used in their 2006 film, Yup. He's been killing it for a while!

This one is from Think Thank's 2007 film, "Thanks Brain." This part is sick!

He's a pretty funny guy too; check out this video of him talking about his 5 favorite things to do in the park.

Here's an Arbor video of him winning "Hot Dawgs & Handrails" at Bear Mountain earlier this year. Not only does he have style but he's a got a wide variety of technical tricks.

Burton Snowboards: Jussi Oksanen and Mikkel Bang

Here are a couple of remixed parts from Transworld's "In Color." The first clip is of Jussi Oksanen...

and the second is of Mikkel Bang, who managed to get the opener for the film. He's an awesome rider for sure.

"Now You Know" Introduction and Scot Brown

Wow, this is quite a treat! "Now You Know" by Sandbox Films just gave Transworld Snowboarding a few clips to post on their website. This was one of my favorite videos of the year and they decided to post Scot Brown's part, one of the smoothest rail riders I have ever seen!  Click the picture below to watch!

Kazuhiro Kokubo Burton Clip

Here's a quick mash-up of some Burton and Standard Films' footy. Kazu is a very well rounded rider; he kills it in powder and pipe. I'm a big fan of the first part of this clip; I love watching hip sessions!

Scott Stevens Volcom Edit

Here's a short clip with some of Scott's bangers from the newest Think Thank flick "Right Brain, Left Brain." He's definitely the king of unconventional snowboarding.

K2 Snowboarding 2010/2011

Here's the intro to K2's snowboard video this year. I've ridden K2 boards for a few years now and I have to say, I absolutely love them. They've got a great team as well; this video will feature Eero Niemela, Shaun Mckay, Jordan Mendenhall, Leanne Pelosi, Danny Larsen, Gretchen Bleiler,Travis Parker Wille Yli-Luoma, Jake Kuzyk, Robbie Walker, Nick Dirks, Tim Eddy, Chris Beresford, and Matt Belzile.

"All Plugged Up" by Variety Pack

Eddie Grams has released the second installment of Variety Pack's newest movie "All Plugged Up" for free online! Check it here; this video has so many riders, here are just a few: Heikki Sorsa, Parker Duke, Knut Eliassen, Ted Borland, Scotty Arnold, Matt Belzile, Chris Grenier, Alex Andrews, and Halldor Helgason.

This is a good vid, check it out! Matt Belzile and Parker Duke have killer parts.

Simon Chamberlain in "Cheers" Remix

The Stepchild Team is going to be releasing their riders' parts from the newest People flick "Cheers." First is Canadian Simon Chamberlain; he's a great rider with super smooth style, make sure you see the front board gap at the end of this clip.

Next week will be JP Walker's part.

Banshee Bungee Promo Video

I just saw this video a little bit ago and it gives you a good look at using this product. A friend of mine just purchased one and I have to say, it's pretty awesome! I almost face planted on my skateboard when I tried it, it's really got some power!

I particularly like this video because it's got some great clips direct some films that came out this year, including "Right Brain, Left Brain," "In Color," "Let's Make Better Mistakes Tomorrow, "Now You Know," "The Arena," and "The Leak."

Mark Frank Montoya

Professional snowboarder, skateboarder, and entrepreneur. Mark Frank Montoya is what I like to call a boss. This guy has been shredding hard for at over a decade, whether he's throwing down a cab 900, doing a nollie off a cornice, or just ripping pow with an open coat, this guy just has the classic style everyone loves. This is an extremely old part of his in "Back in Black" by Kingpin Productions in 2003. This last back 180 cliff drop is nuts...

The first part of his I ever saw of his was from "Burning Bridges" by kidsKNOW in 2005. Better yet, Buena Vista Social Club did the music for his part! He even could throw down cab 1080s back in the day.

Here's a clip of him in Park City's full length feature "City, Park City" from 2006.

Spot Check at Bear Mountain!

32 just came out with their first Spot Check of the year! I love these videos; they always have great park riding and great riders. I've been especially impressed by Johnny Lazz these last few years; he's grown to be to be truly great snowboarder.

Wednesday, December 1, 2010

Nils Arvidsson, Bryan Fox, and Anton Gunnarsson in "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In"

Here's a vid of Anton Gunnarsson doing some urban rails, crazy wall rides, and pole jam backies. He's got some good style too.

This is the first time I've seen Bryan Fox in a video since "People" back in the day. I hear he just lives in the woods nowadays...pretty sweet.

Nitro just has an all around great team; look at my previous posts for more "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In" videos.

Travis Rice and Absinthe Films

The backcountry legend still has it; this month he managed to land a cover for Transworld's 200th issue! Check out the picture, it's pretty damn intense!
As most of you know, Travis has been a pioneer in powder and big jump riding; he was probably the first to land a double rodeo 1080 in the backcountry and on Chad's Gap no less. This part is from "Pop" by Absinthe back in 2004.

A few years later, Travis went back to Absinthe for "More." This is from 2006; this was the first DVD I bought with him in it and it blew my mind.

After the success of "That's It, That's All" Travis filmed with Absinthe again in their 2009 production "Neverland." I've always loved Absinthe; Justin Hostynek has a very artistic vision for all of his movies.

Park City, Opening Day 2010!

Park City is a great place; I spend four days there last year and it was amazing! They've got great powder, some good backcountry access, and three incredibly fun terrain parks! Here's a short clip of Aaron Biittner, Stevie Bell, Zak Hale, Sage Kotsenburg, Blaze Kotsenburg, and Griffin Seibert ripping it up there a week or so ago. I like Sage's helmet camera shots in this vid; it's cool to watch snowboarding in the perspective of such a good snowboarder (I think he has Cab 1440s under his belt).

I hope I get there chance to go there again soon! If you have a chance, definitely go!

Scotty Lago Killing It!

He doesn't just ride half-pipe, he's an incredibly well-rounded rider! Here's a video of him shredding it up in Grenade's 2008 flick "The Boned Age." The last shot is probably the worst wipe-out I've ever seen...his board actually comes off!

Here's another video with some of his footy in Transworld's flick from last year "Get Real."

Last but not least, Scotty Lago's full part from Flow's "Witness the Sickness." The double kicker line in this vid is nuts and goes to show Lago can throw down anywhere, anytime. An all around great part for sure. The last gap is absolutely mind-boggling, make sure you don't miss it. It goes to show in order to be a pro in this business, you have to scare yourself on a daily basis.

KBR's Full Movie "Homework"

These European kids put together a pretty good production this year. This video has some great rail riding; just wait for Toni Kerkelä part at the end. He gives Jed Anderson, Ethan Deiss, and Ryan Paul a run for their money.

"F IT" Montage and Bonus Footage

This first clip is of Austen Sweetin, Cam Pierce, Niko Cioffi, and Alek Oestreng shredding it up at Cranmore in New Hampshire. The rooftop gap is one of the more intense things I've ever seen.

This second clip is from Camp of Champions at Whistler Resort in British Columbia. Unfortunately Andreas Wiig and Pat Moore got injured this year so this was one of their few chances to actually get some footage. Also featuring Nic Sauve and Alek Oestreng.

Here's some more bonus footage taken at Seven Springs in Pennsylvania. Spring riding is my favorite, I definitely love these kinds of edits. Featuring Alek Oestreng, Stevie Bell, Niko Cioffi, and Austen Sweetin.

This last one if of Forum's trip to Finland. This is the best clip; it's got a ton of second angles of the rail shots from the movie, plus a bunch of pretty good extras as well. Featuring Nic Sauve, Niko Cioffi, and Cameron Pierce. Enjoy!

More Snowflex Clips!

This first video is of native Virginia rider Cody Boan riding at the Liberty Snowflex Center in Lynchburg. He currently rides for Arbor Snowboards and shows up for many of the contests in the area. The switch back 900 he pulls in this video is probably the best trick I've seen there.

Here's another edit of pros Scott Stevens, Chris Beresford, and Yale Cousino shredding it up as well.

If you haven't tried Snowflex, I highly suggest it. Although it'll never match real snow and you have to dumb down you're carving a bit, it's great practice and is the closest snowboard simulation you'll find around.

Scot Brown Blowing Up!

Lucas Magoon fans, I have a new rail rider for you to idolize. He managed to get to opener for two legit films this year, "Now You Know" by Sandbox and "Witness the Sickness" by Flow Snowboards. Here's a clip of him nailing a trick on one of the biggest wooden rails I have ever seen.

This is his part from "Witness the Sickness," Flow's flick this year. This is kid is just unreal on rails; he makes everything look so damn easy.

Also featuring riding from Flow riders Austin Young, Ian Thorley, and Kade Madsen.

Mammoth Opening Day Clip!

An awesome clip I just found of some pros throwing down at Mammoth on Opening Day. I can't wait until my local mountain is open for business!

Riders include Dylan Alito, Mason Aguirre, Shayne Pospisil, Lonnie Kauk, Luke and Jack Mitrani, Tyler Flanagan, Forest Bailey, Mitch Richmond, Broc Crouch, Judd Henkes, Cornell Agee, Eddie Wall, Zak Hale, and Johnny Lazzereschi.

Tyler Flanagan Montage

I don't understand how kids so young can be this good. He's only 16 yet he competed in the X-Games last year. Here's a short clip of him winning slopestyle at the Breckenridge stop of the Dew Tour

32, one of his sponsors, has been releasing some good videos of him these last few years. This one is of him riding Mammoth last year...

and another of him riding at June Mountain...

and this last one is of him riding at Mammoth opening week. Apparently he managed to bag the ender for Mammoth's park video coming out soon. A solid accomplishment for sure.

Video Review: "Now You Know"

What do I look for in a snowboard video? Instead of going through all of the unnecessary nitpicky details, I'll just say the best ones are those which remind me why I love snowboarding. It's not just the riding and the tricks; it's the entire experience. It's the people you meet, having fun with friends, the random shenanigans, the places you get to travel, and the the natural beauty of the sport. Sandbox's 2010 flick is one of my favorites this year for all of those reasons. First of all, the riding level is incredible; all of Canada's best riders are featured in this film and they all throw down! Scot Brown has an amazing opening part; he's so fluid on his board he might as well ride rails with his hands in his pockets. I hadn't heard of him until this year but regardless I'm impressed. This is also his second opener of the year, in addition to Flow's "Witness the Sickness." You also get to see Andrew Geeves shred the DC Mountain Lab which is probably to coolest terrain park ever built! If you haven't heard of it, I suggest checking out it because it will blow your mind! I'll also give a shout-out to Ryan Hall, Steve Cartwright, and Cory Gallon for super stylish urban riding as well. The most impressive section of the movie however would be the monster kicker session filmed by two helicopters! There's nothing more surreal than seeing Seb Toots and Mark McMorris throw down a double cork 1260s with snow capped peaks in the background. Basically "Now You Know" is an old school snowboard movie on par with today's incredible level of progression. Helicopter shots, trips to Japan for amazing powder, trees lines, double corks, and some of the biggest backcountry gaps I have ever seen are in this film. "Now You Know" is entertaining not only for its snowboarding, but also as a film. It has great music, great filler, and great editing.  For only $4.99 too it is such a steal; I highly suggest downloading it on iTunes, you will not be disappointed.  Click the picture below for a link.

John Jackson Montage

John has been slaying it for years now but since joining the Forum team, he has really started to blow up. You'd be hard pressed to find a better country rider than him; he goes big with insane tricks. Here's his part in Standard Film's White Balance from back in 2004. I thought it was really cool seeing him ride rails again, it's been a while!

Here's another one of his Standard parts.  This is from "Paradox" back in 2005.

In this video of John discusses his season and his part in last year's Forum video "Forever." It's impressive that he's gotten the ender for two years in a row now.

I somehow found a video of John's full part from "F IT" but unfortunately it was taken down. Here's some of his bonus footage though and some second angles on his tricks.

Erik Botner in "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In"

Here's another section from Nitro's team movie "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In." I have to say, I wasn't too familiar with Nitro's team before I saw this part and Marc Swoboda's but I'm pretty damn impressed.

Erik has got that effortless style I love, both in the street and in powder. I was also happy to see another trick over the Mount Baker road gap; pretty much any trick at that spot is insane!

Tuesday, November 16, 2010

Matt Belzile!

Matt is an insane shredder! I first saw his riding years ago in some Camp of Champions videos and since then he has been blowing up! Nowadays he rides for Eddie Grams and the rest of the Variety Pack crew. This first video is him riding in Alterna Films' 2009 flick "Knockout."

Last year he managed to bag the ender for "Not Bad" by Variety Pack. This is a solid part and really demonstrates his backcountry prowess.

Lastly we have his opener for part two of Variety Pack's film this year "All Plugged Up." He is quickly becoming one of my favorite riders; he's has a good variety of tricks and pulls them off with great style.

To download the whole Variety Pack feature for $5, including both "All Plugged Up" and "The Leak," visit http://www.varietyinyourlife.com/.

More Early Season Snowboarding in Utah!

Watching these edits just makes me want to move there even more. First we have some footage from Sean Black, Derek Dennison, and Cale Zima in Brighton. Even though their just hitting up some small park features, it still gets me excited for this season.

Next we have another Bone Zone edit. It's crazy how many well known riders show up just to ride this backwoods park. Looks like a great time!

In this edit we have Matt Piasecki, Ted Borland, Scotty Arnold, Alex Andrews, Jason Heckle, Scott Stevens, Brandon Hammid, Derek Dennison, Chris Grenier, Matty Mo, Jonas Carlson, Johnny Brady, Alex Sherman, Zak Hale, Justin Bennee, Parker Worthen, Blaze Kotsenburg, Parker Duke, Tim Ronan, Noah Lohr, Jayell White, Johnny Miller, and Dylan Thompson.

Video Review: "Bon Voyage"

When I was picking out which snowboard videos to buy this year, I will honestly say that "Bon Voyage" by Videograss was not my top pick.  I didn't have very high expectations for it; I bought it mainly because I wanted to see Jed Anderson's part.  However, I couldn't have been any more pleased with my choice.  Jed of course killed it; the part really shows how versatile a jibber he is.  He knows how to session a rail; he lands over ten tricks on one (definitely my favorite section of the video)!  But everyone else threw down too!  Mikey LeBlanc is of course up to his old shenanigans, just wait for the stair ollie at the end!  Alex Cantin also has a sick opener; he is inhumanly smooth on rails.  One of my favorite Salt Lake City shredders Chris Grenier has a banger part; he makes every trick look so easy (his backyard demolition shenanigans are pretty damn entertaining too).  Think Thank riders Johnny Miller and Gus Engle also have great parts.  Legends Darrell Mathes, Jon Kooley, and Jordan Mendenhall also kill it; especially Mendenhall.  I haven't seen him in a video since "Burning Bridges" and he definitely steps his game up.  His last trick is intense!  The editing was great as well; their filler had me laughing pretty hard and the intro artwork for each rider was really cool.  Definitely a suggested buy; it might not have the mind blowing progression like Standard but it's got some solid riders and great tricks.

Early Season Shredding in Utah!

Brighton Resort in Utah is officially open! Here's a short clip of their opening day by Videograss. Featuring Alex Andrews, Johnny Miller, Ben Bilocq, Dave Downing, Chris Brewster, Dylan Thompson, Jonas Carlson, Parker Duke, and Anton Gunnarsson.

A short clip of Zak Hale and Alex Andrews shredding the Bone Zone in Utah. Just some homies camping in the woods and snowboarding! I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.

"No Joke" by Nuu Life Cinema

Just watched this, it's a pretty sick video. I have to say, the McMorris brothers, Mark and Craig, are both pretty insane riders. It was also cool to see Matt Munn, maker of the YouTube snowboard series "Meat Magic" in this video as well. He's a good rider and deserves to be in this crew.

Also featuring the riding of Geoff Brown, Andrew Burns, Gordon Emery, Adam Chuntz, Kurtis Rothecker, Connor Copithorn, Lucas Ouellette, Robby Balharry, Tanner Davidson, Zach Stone, Jesmond Dubeau, Katie Hall-Leah, David Craig, John Swystun, Kyle Herperger, Dan Zimmerman, James Murphy, Garrett Kendel, Barrett Lucak, Joe Hills, Jason Gretzinger, and Jordan Phillips.

Ryan Paul (A.K.A. 86)

This kid is insane!  Definitely one of the best amateur boarders I have seen in a long time.  Last year he won the W.C.I. at Mammoth.  He even did a front flip onto a rail!

Here's a video of Ryan shredding it up at Big Bear last year.  Absinthe rider Cale Zima throws in a little commentary as well.

Lastly, I have his part in the Minnesota snowboard film "Poachers 10" by Bald E-Gal. This part is great! Click the picture for a link to a Transworld exclusive video.

Definitely look out for him in the future. The season has barely begun and he's already won the Downtown Throwdown in Seattle!

Video Review: "The Arena"

As a native of New York, I don't have many options in terms of backcountry terrain and powder.  It's called the "Ice Coast" for a reason.  When it has snows where I live, I always turn to urban riding.  Though some people don't like it, I think it is one of the most artistic aspects of the sport.  It's not just about the trick; it's about location, consequence, and environment.  When it comes to urban riding, Technine and the Finger on Da Trigger are always at the forefront.  The quality of riding in "The Arena" is fantastic; Jonah Owen, Derek Dennison, and especially Dylan Thompson have fantastic parts (check out his part on my blog if you haven't already).  I was definitely disappointed when I saw that Johnnie Paxson had hurt himself this year (they even show the fall that did it in the video) but despite this he manages to stomp some insane stunts.  Frankly, on top Derek Dennison's first jump (best of the entire video) I think Johnnie had the best  tricks in the entire video.  He managed to bag the ender for "Hard to Earn" last year and I think he may get it again next year if he doesn't hurt himself.  Even though the riding was good, the editing just couldn't keep up.  Frankly, MFM and F.O.D.T.'s films have always been a bit disappointing in that regard; I think Cole Taylor is good but for riding of that caliber, someone else could do a much better job.  The production effects were good but there was too much slow motion and filler (Dennison's part felt like it had only ten tricks).  In addition, you never get a feel for the crew dynamic which I think can be very interesting.  All in all, great riding but maybe not worth your buy.

Watch "Eurogap 3" by Pablo Films

I just watched this a few moments ago, it's damn good! This video has some of the top tier European riders including Eero Ettala, Fredu Sirvio, Niki Korpella, Joni Malmi, Hampus Mosesson, Heikki Sorsa, Markku Koski, Jussi Oksanen, and Iikka Backstrom. It's got sick riding as well as some funny extras. Those Europeans are so damn crazy! Click the picture below for a link to the video.

Some Next Level Halfpipe Runs and Manuvs!

First we have a clip Shaun White throwing down the Double McTwist 1260. Love him or hate him, he's still pretty damn good.

The second is from last year, when Kevin Pearce beat Shaun White at the European Open. As many of you know, he had a grisly halfpipe crash last year and suffered serious brain damage. However, he has made great strides and is on the way to a full recovery. Who knows how the Olympics would have turned out if he hadn't injured himself.

This last clip is probably the best halfpipe run I have ever seen! Danny Davis is my favorite halfpipe rider; he has great style and tricky grabs for his double corks. I like how he manages to throw a double rodeo into his line as well. Unfortunately Danny got into a drunk driving accident after winning this contest (The Mammoth Grand Prix) as well as Winter Dew Tour at Snowbasin and was unable to compete in the Olympic Halfpipe.

These three are in my opinion the most technical and well-rounded halfpipe riders. I hope this year I'll be able to see them all compete at once!

Nicolas Müller in "The B"

This is a clip from last year's Burton movie. Nicolas Müller is in my opinion one of the best powder riders out there; he has always been concerned more with style and flow than with progressive tricks. That being said, he still manages to land a double backflip in this vid. Enjoy!

"Paint It Red" by Bear Mountain

Bear Mountain's full length snowboard DVD is now online and free! I love Bear Mountain; they always have to must creative features and some really great snowboarders. I hope I have the opportunity to snowboard there someday. I've already seen a bunch of footage from this movie; it looks great! Enjoy!

The Liberty Snowflex Center!

I was actually in Lynchburg this afternoon riding there and it was a ton of fun!  There's definitely a learning curve so I took about five or six runs to get used to it.  Though it can never replace snow, I would kill to have one near me so I could ride all year.  After five or so months without snowboarding, it was just great a feeling to strap back into a board.  Check out this vid, it explains how the system works and also has some solid tricks thrown in there.

The 2010-2011 Season Is Here!

Although there isn't any snow where I am, snowboard season has begun out West! Here's a clip of Boreal's Opening Day...

and one for Loveland as well.

Words can't even describe how psyched I am for the season!

"House of 1817: The Movie"

The House of 1817's new movie is out and it's completely free! Check it out here!

Ethan Deiss is probably one of the craziest rail riders I have ever seen and I was not let down by his part. A few of his tricks, along with some of Jake Olson-Elm's even made it to the Transworld movie this year. Joe Sexton and Chris Bradshaw even make an appearance. Props go to Cory Beiersdorf for the ender though; he had a nasty part! The Midwest definitely has some talented boarders.

Only $8.99 and $4.99 respectively!

Marc Swoboda in "Turn On, Tune Out, Drop In"

This part is straight hammers! I'd heard of this guy but hadn't seen a full part of his before; he's nasty! He's got some style too!

2. Scott Stevens: $2,000
3. Forest Bailey: $1,000
4. Jake Kuzyk: $750

Alex Cantin with Videograss

This year Alex bagged the opener for the newest Videograss flick "Bon Voyage."  This kid has some seriously style and great tricks; check out some of his footage from last year.

Here's a trailer for "Bon Voyage" as well, definitely worth your money; its got some great riding in it.

"This Video Sucks" by StepChild

Here's the full version of Stepchild's 2009 film "This Video Sucks." JP Walker's part is actually all switch which is pretty damn impressive. Also featuring the riding of Simon Chamberlain, Joe Sexton, Markku Koski, Stian Solberg, Eman Anderson, Risto Ruokola, and Fredu Sirvio.  Definitely an excellent free movie.

Mark Sollors Clips

Mark Sollors is probably my favorite Canadian shredder out there; he's such a well-rounded and stylish rider. Here's a 2007 montage of him riding for the StepChild movie "Child Support" as well as Sandbox's "Time Well Wasted."

This is his 2009 part in Variety Pack's film "Not Bad."

Click here for an interview with Mark while he filmed for Transworld's "In Color." In it he discusses his past season as well as his frustration with the hate that sometimes exists between backcountry, street, and contest riders.

Seb Toots!

Kids are getting crazy nowadays. Here's his part from "Knockout" by Alterna Films a few years ago...

his 2009 part from "Black Winter" by Standard Films...

and lastly him practicing at the Red Bull Development Park in New Zealand. I love how he can throw down frontside and backside double corks, regular and switch.

Video Review: "F IT"

As winners of Transworld's prestigious video of the year award in 2009, I had high expectations for Forum's newest flick. "Forever" was an excellent film with great riding as well as editing. "F IT" was no where close to reaching my expectations and fell several strides short of "Forever". Not only did the film fall ten minutes shorter than most snowboard videos, but the editing was, for lack of a better word, immature. It seemed like they just wanted the opportunity to swear a lot. Though I at first thought their sex, drugs, and rock snowboards were funny, in light if this film it seems like it's just a cheap marketing strategy to get kids to buy their product.  The editing in the film made very little sense; though the production effects were excellent, is that necessary in a snowboard film? In addition to that there are clips of unicorns, swearing owls, bodybuilders, space expeditions, and of course some annoying autotuning. It made very little sense and actually got a bit annoying to watch. Now that I've gotten all my criticisms out of the way, I can focus on it's pluses, mainly being the riding. It was great to see former Variety Pack rider Cameron Pierce shredding with Forum; he's an extremely talented and stylish rider that deserves to be on such a well-known team. Nico Sauve also had an incredibly impressive part; since his first Forum flick "First Chair / Last Call" he has made incredible progress. However, John Jackson is definitely what made this video. Check out one of my earlier posts, he has an insane part! The only other rider I know that goes as big as John is Travis Rice and that is a pretty impressive feat. Not only does he throw down almost every trick in the book, but does some really cool pillow lines. He's just a tank. So basically I wouldn't suggest buying the DVD but iTunes is pretty cheap so maybe download it there and then mute it when you watch it.

Eero Ettala's 2009-2010 Season

A few clips of him from last season.  The first is a montage from his television series "Tracking Eero"...

and the second is his winning run in X-Games 14 Slopestyle. Pretty damn impressive...

"All Plugged Up / The Leak" Available for Download

Now available for download on Variety Pack's website for only $5. They're a great film company, they definitely deserve support. Click here to buy.

Video Review: "The Storming"

If you are looking for mind blowing tricks, this is the snowboard video to buy. This year Standard Films set the bar for progressive snowboarding in terms of magnitude as well as technicality. The roster for the film is quite impressive; X-Games Big Air Champion as well as rookie Halldor Helgason has one the most impressive sections I have ever seen. On top of throwing down double corks in the backcountry, his ender is possibly the most technical rail trick I have ever seen! Of course you can't have one Helgason without the other. For the skateboarders reading this review, Eiki Helgason even manages to stomp a 360 flip which makes absolutely no sense to me. Another aspect I liked was that the film began with Sammy Luebke riding lines in Alaska; that was the first big mountain opener I've seen in a while. Of course, no Standard Films movie would be complete without Norwegian legend Torstein Horgmo. It's incredibly smoothly he lands his various 1080s in the backcountry, both regular and switch. Of course, the film ends with his famed triple cork but don't let knowing the ender stop you from buying the film; it's worth every penny. My only complaint would be that the street sections were a bit lacking but this is only a minor problem. This is a great film to buy if you want to see how far snowboarding has progressed.

What is Style?

Pros from the TTR World Snowboard Tour discuss their perception of style in the sport of snowboarding. Legends Nicolas Mueller, Heikki Sorsa, Todd Richards, and Marco Grilc as well as rookies Mikkel Bang and Stale Sandbech share their thoughts in this video.

Video Review: "In Color"

Definitely a great movie from Transworld this year.  It's sometimes nice to just take a step away from contest hype and double corks and watch some good old fashioned tricks.  Mikkel Bang's section was fantastic; we all know he can throw some serious tricks while competing but it was much nicer to see him stomp a stylish rodeo and some huge airs on a hip jump.  I was also impressed by Phil Jacques; though I had seen his name before I had never watched him ride.  He has incredible rail mastery, both regular and switch.  Mark Sollors and Keegan Valaika of course brought the fire with their parts as well, throwing down both in street and in powder.  In addition, the intro montage was very entertaining; Ethan Deiss's part, though brief is incredible to watch.   Though the production for this film was excellent, Transworld seems to lack the vibe that exists in Variety Pack, Think Thank, and Absinthe crews (or they don't show very much of it).  Overall though, the film was excellent and I definitely suggest buying it if you are sick of double corks and wanna see some old school shredding and editing.

Video Review: "Right Brain, Left Brain"

I remember the first time I saw a Think Thank video.  It was "Patchwork Patterns," their 2006 film and I had no idea what to expect.  For thirty minutes I watched a blur of  strange tricks I had never seen before at the most bizarre places imaginable.  I turned off my television and didn't really know what to think.  After watching their 2010 film "Right Brain, Left Brain," I still didn't know what to think ...except for this: mind-blowing!  They out did themselves; not only did they shred probably the gnarliest spots I've ever seen, but they even threw in at least four double corks.  Scott Stevens, Chris Larson, Ben Bogart, Sean Genovese, and Nick Visconti all pulled of some of the most creative and technically difficult stunts I have even seen.  My shout out though goes to Jess Kimura; she had hands down the best female snowboard part I have ever seen.  Jesse Burtner also deserves props for helping put this together; he's a talented and artistic editor.  He always has a vision for his movies; the brain scan theme is creatively tied into this film.  Each of the transitions is funny, original, and gives you an impression of each rider as well as the process they go through to land their tricks.  In addition unlike many film companies, the time between tricks is brief so you get to see a ton of footy.  If you can only buy one video this winter, this is the one to get.

John Jackson in "F IT"

Here's an awesome post for you, John Jackson's ender in "F IT."  Few people throw down like John in the backcountry.  They charge $8 for "F IT" on iTunes but honestly I'd pay that much for just this part...enjoy!

"The Leak" by Variety Pack

In case you haven't already seen this film, get ready for the best free snowboard film ever made! I guess that's just an opinion but still, this movie is pretty damn good. And it was only half a season's worth of footage!

Eddie Grams has always been my favorite editor. His simple editing allows you to focus on the snowboarding but also gives you a good feel for the crew's vibe and also the pain they went through for their parts. I have supported Variety Pack (formerly Naptime) for several years now and will continue to do so! Enjoy the riding of Salt Lake City greats Alex Andrews, Alex Beebe, Ben Farrell, Brandon Hammid, Ian Boll, Mac Spedale, Matty Mo, Parker Duke, Sage Kotsenburg, Sean Black, and Ted Borland.

Definitely one of the best films I've seen this year! Dan Brisse once again demonstrates his urban riding prowess and classic riders like Gigi Ruf, J.P. Solberg, Nicolas Muller, and even Terje seal the deal. Bode Merrill also had a killer part; I'm glad he's finally gotten the recognition he deserves and is now an entrenched member of the Absinthe crew. Click the picture for a link to iTunes!

Zac Marben with Vans Footwear

Volcom rider Zac Marben has been a favorite of mine since I first saw him in "Escramble" in 2007. He's got the best style and always makes his tricks look easy.

Camp of Champions, July 2007

An old video that opened my eyes to rail riding. This was the first time I witnessed the mastery of Jed Anderson and Joe Sexton; in my opinion they are the top tier of jibbers. "Loud Pipes" by Ratatat also adds a good touch; I just saw them live last night!

"NowHere" by Absinthe Films

The snowboard film is out and in stores. I just got it in the mail last week week and was very impressed. Everyone killed it but my favorite part definitely goes to Cale Zima; the man knows how to take a beating and won't hesitate to throw himself off sketchy features.

Also featuring Dan Brisse, Jake Blauvelt, Gigi Rüf, Lucas Debari, Fredi Kalbermatten, Sylvain Bourbousson, Romain deMarchi, DCP, JP Solberg, Annie Boulanger, Marie-France Roy, Bjorn Leines, Taka Nakai, Tadashi Fuse, Jules Reymond, Blair Habenicht, Terje Haakonsen, Bode Merrill, Wolfgang Nyvelt, and Nicolas Müller. Definetely a must buy for the season.

Firsthand: Nicolas Muller

Kind of an old video, but definitely interesting. Muller is one of my favorite riders of all time; creative tricks, creative spots, and of course style that no one else can match. He even made the cover of Men's Health in Europe!
